Last week, my neighbor Linda told me she'd been "using AI" every day. When I asked what she meant, she said, "I ask ChatGPT what to make for dinner."
That's great — genuinely! But then I showed her something different. I showed her an AI agent that checked her calendar, noticed she had guests coming Friday, looked up dietary preferences she'd saved, found a recipe that worked for everyone, and added the grocery list to her shopping app.
Her jaw dropped. "That's AI too?"
Yes. And understanding the difference between what Linda was doing and what I showed her is one of the most useful things you can learn right now.
So what's the difference?
An AI chatbot is like a really smart friend sitting across the table from you. You ask a question, they give you an answer. It's a conversation — back and forth, one exchange at a time. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude all work this way when you're just chatting with them.
An AI agent, on the other hand, is more like a capable assistant who goes off and does things on your behalf. You give it a goal — not just a question — and it figures out the steps, uses different tools, and comes back with results. It doesn't just talk. It acts.
Chatbot: "What's a good subject line for my email?" → gives you ideas
Agent: "Write and send a follow-up email to everyone from yesterday's meeting" → drafts the email, pulls the attendee list, and sends it
Why does this matter for you?
You pick the right tool. Sometimes you just need a quick answer (chatbot). Sometimes you need a task handled (agent).
You sound current. When colleagues mention AI agents, you'll know exactly what they mean.
You start thinking bigger. Once you realize AI can do more than answer questions, you start asking, "What else could it handle for me?"
What To Do Next
This week, try giving AI a small goal instead of just a question. For example: "Help me plan a 30-minute presentation on [your topic] including an outline, three key points, and a closing statement." That's you thinking like someone who uses an agent. Visit WinmodeAI for hands-on help.
